Australia October 2026 Student Visa Changes: Review Onshore and Family Plans

📰 Study Abroad 📅 23 Oct 2026

Reviewed 22 October 2026. Study Australia published an update on 7 October describing Student visa reforms effective from 2 October 2026. The changes address onshore applications and family inclusion, with exemptions and transitional arrangements. Current Student visas are not affected.

Check your own circumstances

Applicants already in Australia should review whether the intended further application can be lodged there. Families should investigate the rules that apply to their proposed application rather than relying on an older assumption about inclusion. The official update sets out relevant exceptions.

The announcement also discusses a proposed provider-transfer stream whose details are still being developed. It should not be treated as a fully specified process already available for every transfer. Check the current official position before making a course or provider change.

What to do before committing money

Write down your current visa situation, location, proposed study and family arrangements. Ask precise questions and retain written answers. Where an individual eligibility issue affects status or family plans, obtain advice from a registered migration professional.

Our Australia 2027 planning guide explains the wider course and budget checks. Read the separate BSB80120 Graduate Diploma news brief if your study package includes that qualification. The two October announcements concern different decisions and should be reviewed separately.
