An Australian study plan needs a fresh review if it was built using advice from earlier in 2026. Two official October announcements affect different decisions: the Student visa application reforms and restrictions on new international enrolments in a particular Graduate Diploma of Management course. Indian applicants should understand the scope before choosing a programme or making family travel plans.
This guide was researched on 22 October 2026. It explains the practical questions raised by those announcements and offers a step-by-step method for comparing courses, preparing funding and checking documents. The exact visa position still depends on your circumstances, so use the official pages alongside the information issued by your institution.
Study Australia's 7 October announcement describes Student visa reforms effective from 2 October 2026. They concern onshore applications and family inclusion, with exemptions and transitional arrangements. Current Student visas are not affected by the changes. The announcement also distinguishes a proposed provider-transfer stream whose details are still being developed.
A separate announcement says new international students cannot enrol in or commence BSB80120 Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) from 5 October 2026. Students who had already started before that date can continue. The restriction is course-specific; it should not be described as a ban on all Australian graduate diplomas or management degrees.
Read our October Student visa news brief and BSB80120 course restriction update for the focused summaries. The planning steps below help you apply those distinctions to your own shortlist.
A student applying from India for an initial course has a different situation from someone already in Australia considering a further qualification. A family planning to relocate together has additional questions. Write down your current location, visa situation, proposed course and whether family members are part of the plan before seeking clarification.
If you are already in Australia, check whether you can make the intended application there and what evidence is needed for any exemption you rely on. Avoid booking travel around assumptions drawn from an older application. Ask a registered migration professional when an individual eligibility question affects your lawful status or family arrangements.
If you are applying offshore, review the current requirements for your own application and examine the course carefully. Do not assume that an onshore restriction prevents every applicant in India from studying in Australia. Equally, do not assume a university's willingness to offer a place settles every visa question.
Record the programme's full name, code, qualification level, teaching campus and provider. A similar title does not establish that two courses are the same. This matters particularly when an announcement identifies a specific code, as the BSB80120 update does.
If your study package contains more than one course, list each component separately. Ask the provider whether every part remains available for your intake and what happens if one component is changed. Get written confirmation of the revised study plan before paying for a replacement or agreeing to a new package.
Compare the learning itself. A management course should teach skills that follow from your background and intended work. Read the modules, assessment methods and entry requirements. A programme selected mainly because it appears to provide more time in the country may leave you with a qualification that adds little to your career.
Contact the provider promptly and describe your status accurately: applied, accepted, paid, issued a CoE or already commenced. Those stages are different. Request written information about available options, relevant refund arrangements and how any revised course affects your existing study plan.
Keep the offer, payment receipts, CoE and correspondence together. Ask for the reason behind a proposed alternative and compare its curriculum and total cost. Do not accept a replacement simply because it is offered quickly. It should still meet your educational goals and any relevant application requirements.
Where a provider default arises, the official announcement explains the provider's obligations and points to tuition protection support. Read that information directly rather than relying on a general refund promise. The action you need depends on what has happened in your own case.
Write a short description of the work you hope to do after graduation. Identify the knowledge you already have and the gap the proposed course will fill. An engineering graduate moving towards data analysis, for example, should inspect the statistics, programming and applied project content rather than choosing by the degree title alone.
Ask how students are assessed and what evidence of learning they produce. A practical project can become useful portfolio material if you understand the work and can explain your contribution. An industry connection is useful context, but it should not be read as a placement guarantee unless the institution makes that commitment explicitly.
Compare three to five suitable options using the same criteria: entry fit, curriculum, delivery, total cost and career relevance. Add location and personal support where they matter to you. Keeping the list manageable gives you time to investigate each option properly instead of collecting offers you cannot meaningfully compare.
Start with the international tuition quote for your intake. Record deposits, instalments, mandatory charges and scholarship conditions. Check whether a scholarship applies throughout the course or only to an initial period. A percentage discount can sound substantial while leaving important charges outside its scope.
Build a living budget from current accommodation choices near the campus. Include utilities, food, transport, phone service and ordinary personal expenses. Add separate amounts for flights, application charges, insurance, English testing and initial housing costs. Maintain a reserve for a delayed arrival, an unexpected move or a necessary trip home.
Keep the government's financial evidence requirement separate from your real spending forecast. A minimum evidence figure does not price your chosen lifestyle or cover every possible expense. Review the current visa checklist before application, and use actual provider and housing information for your family budget.
Ask your lender for a written repayment schedule and the conditions attached to each disbursement. Understand how interest accumulates during study and what happens if you defer an intake. Compare the repayment burden with realistic employment scenarios, including the possibility of working outside Australia after graduation.
Prepare a plan that covers essential expenses without assuming immediate student employment. You can then treat any lawful earnings as additional support rather than a requirement for paying the next tuition instalment. This reduces the pressure to accept work that conflicts with study or does not fit your visa conditions.
If the numbers do not work, change the plan while you still have choices. Compare another campus, a suitable lower-cost programme or a later intake. A clear budget boundary helps a counsellor recommend options that are actually workable for your household.
Read the institution's current English requirements, including test version, delivery mode and section minimums. Then check the evidence needed for your visa purpose. A test accepted for one purpose may need additional checking for another, especially where a test format has changed.
Use a diagnostic to decide where preparation should focus. Practise speaking with feedback if fluency and organisation are weak. For writing, work on answering the task clearly and correcting recurring errors. For reading and listening, analyse why an answer was missed before completing another timed exercise.
iYou Global lists PTE Academic preparation, IELTS preparation and TOEFL preparation. Our English test study plan explains how to compare coaching and independent practice. Confirm the accepted test before paying an examination fee.
Explain how the proposed course fits your previous study, employment and future work. Use genuine examples of projects or responsibilities. If you are changing fields, describe what you have done to prepare for the new subject and why the change makes sense now.
Check dates and details across your CV, transcripts, references and application forms. Explain legitimate study or employment gaps accurately. Avoid copying statements that describe someone else's career. The strongest account is usually a clear, specific explanation you can support with your own documents.
Save important institutional answers in writing. A clarification about a prerequisite, scholarship or deferral should be stored with the relevant offer. If a later decision depends on that advice, you will be able to identify exactly what was confirmed and when.
If the October changes alter your plan, compare alternatives using actual offers. Our New Zealand 2027 guide and Canada course checklist organise similar questions around qualification, funding and post-study planning.
Keep your assumptions consistent. Compare full tuition and realistic living costs for each option. Mark competitive scholarships as uncertain everywhere. Consider the value of the degree if you return to India, rather than judging countries entirely by a possible work visa.
The official announcement says current Student visas are not affected. Future applications and particular arrangements still need to be checked against the current rules.
The cited restriction names BSB80120 Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning). Verify the exact course code rather than generalising from a similar title.
Confirm course availability, entry conditions, total cost, refund terms and the requirements relevant to your circumstances. Bring your offer and budget to iYou Global study abroad guidance for an organised comparison and application checklist.
