New Zealand Extends Graduate Diploma Post-Study Eligibility from 16 November

Reviewed 22 October 2026. Immigration New Zealand has announced an extension of Post-Study Work Visa eligibility from 16 November 2026 for qualifying Level 7 graduate diploma holders who also hold a bachelor's degree. The announced conditions include full-duration enrolment and full-time study in New Zealand.

Why qualification details matter

A graduate diploma is different from a postgraduate diploma or master's degree. Applicants should record the formal qualification and study history rather than choosing a course from a general claim about post-study work. Proposed credit transfers also deserve careful checking against the official conditions.

Ask your provider for the award title, qualification level and documentation of actual study. Keep your previous degree certificate and transcript available. A clear record helps you ask a specific question if your study history involves transferred credit or a change of programme.

What prospective students should do

Before accepting a 2027 offer, compare curriculum, total cost and the value of the qualification for your intended work. Check the immigration guidance again when the change takes effect and before a future application. Rules available when choosing a course should not be treated as a guarantee of every later outcome.

Our New Zealand planning guide puts this change into a wider study checklist. Read the separate short-term work visa brief to understand why the six-month route is a different option. This article reports the announced future effective date accurately.
