Planning to study in the UK in 2027 starts with a course decision, but it quickly becomes a question about money, timing and what happens after graduation. A university offer is only one part of the journey. You also need a realistic funding plan, the right English evidence and enough time to meet admission conditions without rushing a visa application.
This guide was researched on 22 October 2026. It brings together the two rules that deserve particular attention now: the Graduate visa duration for applications from January 2027 and the current Student visa maintenance figures. The planning suggestions below are practical steps for comparing offers, rather than a promise that every university follows the same admissions calendar.
The official Graduate visa guidance states that eligible non-doctoral applicants applying on or after 1 January 2027 receive 18 months. Applications made by 31 December 2026 can receive two years. Doctoral graduates remain eligible for three years, subject to the route's requirements. The application date matters. Starting a degree before January 2027 does not, by itself, secure the earlier duration.
That makes course quality and career preparation more important when assessing value. Consider whether the programme gives you useful technical skills, credible assessment and opportunities to meet employers. Avoid building a large education loan around the assumption that a particular job or future immigration outcome is guaranteed.
For a shorter explanation, read our UK Graduate visa 2027 news update. Families still comparing destinations can also use our Canada planning guide.
Begin with the work you want to be able to do after the degree. A student interested in business analytics should inspect the balance between statistics, programming and management modules. Someone pursuing public health should examine research methods, practical projects and whether the course requires previous professional experience. Similar course names can lead to very different learning experiences.
Download the module list and assessment description for each shortlisted programme. Mark the subjects you already know, the skills you need to develop and any prerequisites you cannot yet demonstrate. Ask the university about a compulsory placement if a brochure only mentions placement opportunities. An opportunity to apply for an internship is different from a placement arranged for every student.
Use a small comparison sheet with five columns: academic fit, entry requirements, total cost, learning experience and career relevance. Add your evidence beside each judgement. A high ranking can be useful context, but it cannot answer whether a course suits your academic background or whether you can afford the full programme.
An intake is a start date, not a guarantee that every subject is available. A university may offer a programme in September but have a smaller selection in January. Scholarship availability, optional modules and project schedules can also differ. Check the page for the exact intake you intend to join before paying an application fee or deposit.
If January 2027 is your target, work backwards from the university's published document and arrival deadlines. Ask when admission conditions must be met, when a CAS can be issued and how late arrival is handled. If a necessary document cannot be obtained in time, compare a later intake instead of relying on an informal assurance that everything can be completed at the last moment.
For undergraduate applicants using UCAS, read our 2027 equal consideration deadline update. Postgraduate deadlines often work differently, so do not apply an undergraduate deadline to a master's application.
Use the university's actual international tuition quote. Record the deposit, remaining instalments, any conditions attached to a discount and the dates when each amount becomes due. A scholarship described as available should remain outside your confirmed funding total until you receive a written award that states its value and conditions.
Next, prepare a monthly living budget using accommodation quotations near the campus. Include rent, utilities, food, local transport, phone costs and ordinary personal spending. Add separate amounts for flights, insurance or health charges where applicable, visa costs, course materials and the initial housing deposit. Keep an emergency reserve that your family can access without waiting for a new loan disbursement.
Exchange rates can change between admission and payment. Compare your budget at your bank's current remittance quote and at a less favourable rate. This is a planning exercise, not an exchange-rate forecast. It helps you understand whether a modest change would force the family to borrow more or delay a payment.
GOV.UK currently lists maintenance of £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 outside London, for up to nine months, alongside the applicable outstanding course fees. For nine months, those living-cost figures are £13,761 and £10,539 respectively. Evidence rules and exemptions depend on the applicant's circumstances.
Where the standard cash-funds rule applies, the required balance must normally be held for 28 consecutive days, with the end of that period within 31 days of the application. Read the official guidance linked below before arranging evidence. These are visa evidence figures; they are not a quotation for your actual accommodation and daily spending.
Our UK maintenance evidence news brief explains why tuition payments and living funds should be checked separately. If your documents involve a loan, sponsorship or a parent's account, confirm the relevant evidence requirements rather than assuming every form of funding is interchangeable.
Create a requirement list for each offer: accepted test, accepted delivery mode, overall result, component minimums and the date by which evidence must arrive. A strong overall score may still miss an individual writing or speaking requirement. An academic waiver granted by a university also needs to be checked against the evidence needed for your particular visa application.
Take a diagnostic test before selecting a preparation schedule. If writing is your weakest skill, choose feedback that explains argument structure and recurring errors. If listening is the problem, practise accurate comprehension under time pressure instead of repeatedly replaying familiar audio. Our English test preparation guide explains how to turn a diagnostic result into a weekly plan.
iYou Global lists IELTS preparation, TOEFL preparation and other options in its test preparation catalogue. Confirm the current batch format and support before enrolling, and choose the exam from your university's requirements first.
Build a document folder containing your passport, academic records, grading information, CV, references and relevant employment evidence. Use clear filenames and keep original scans separately from compressed copies. Check that your name, dates and qualification titles match across documents, and ask the admissions office how to explain any legitimate difference.
Your statement should explain why this course follows from your previous study or work. Describe a real project, the problem you worked on and the skill you now want to improve. Connect that experience to specific modules. Broad claims about a world-class education are less useful than a clear explanation of what you need to learn and why this programme provides it.
Ask referees early and give them your course shortlist and current CV. Do not draft invented achievements or submit experience that cannot be supported. If an admissions condition is unclear, obtain the answer in writing and save it with the offer. That record becomes useful if a deadline or requirement is later misunderstood.
Imagine that Offer A has a lower tuition fee but requires expensive accommodation close to a city-centre campus. Offer B charges more but offers a project closely connected to your previous experience. The sensible comparison includes the total funded cost, the skills you will gain and whether either option leaves enough financial room for unexpected expenses.
Ask yourself what happens if it takes longer than expected to find suitable work after graduation. Could you manage your loan payments from employment in India or another market? Would the degree still make sense if you returned home? These questions do not predict failure. They test whether the educational decision remains useful under more than one possible outcome.
Prepare your CV and project portfolio during the course, rather than waiting until the final examination. Make a habit of discussing your work clearly, attending relevant career sessions and learning how recruitment works in your target field. A visa provides permission under its conditions; employers still assess your skills, experience and suitability.
This week, select three to five academically suitable programmes and record the exact entry conditions. Ask each institution about anything missing from its published page. In the next stage, complete your English diagnostic, request references and build a budget using actual offers and accommodation evidence. Keep application tasks and financial tasks on the same calendar.
Before accepting a place, check the refund policy, scholarship conditions, programme duration and course start date. Before submitting a visa application, recheck the current official rules and the documents issued by the university. If your circumstances involve dependants, previous refusals or an unusual study history, obtain advice suited to that situation instead of treating a general guide as an individual decision.
No. Eligibility is assessed against the rules and your circumstances when you apply. Build your study plan around a suitable qualification and a sustainable budget, then review the post-study route again near graduation.
Compare the complete cost with academic fit and delivery quality. A modest tuition saving can disappear through higher rent, extra travel or a programme that does not teach the skills you actually need.
Yes. Bring your marks, subject interests, budget and preferred intake to a discussion. Explore iYou Global study abroad guidance and use the linked preparation resources to turn that discussion into a shortlist with specific next steps.
