New Zealand is introducing a new post-study option for international graduates from November 16, 2026.
The new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa will provide eligible graduates with up to six months of open work rights after completing certain New Zealand qualifications.
The route is primarily designed for graduates who have completed eligible NZQCF Level 5 to Level 7 qualifications but do not qualify for the standard Post-Study Work Visa.
Immigration New Zealand says the six-month period can give graduates time to look for employment and explore longer-term work options such as the Accredited Employer Work Visa where they meet the separate requirements.
For the complete student-visa, financial and post-study picture, read our New Zealand Study Visa 2027 for Indian Students Guide.
To qualify, an international graduate must generally have completed a New Zealand qualification at NZQCF Level 5, 6 or 7.
The qualification must:
Applicants must also have held a student visa within the previous three months and have at least NZD 5,000 available to support themselves.
The visa cannot be granted to someone who has previously held either a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa or a Post-Study Work Visa.
The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa allows an eligible graduate to stay and work in New Zealand for up to six months.
It can only be granted once.
It cannot be extended.
Graduates wanting to remain beyond that period must qualify for and obtain another appropriate New Zealand visa before the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa expires.
The new visa provides broad work rights and allows holders to work for employers while exploring longer-term career options.
Current visa conditions also state that holders cannot operate a business as an owner.
The six-month visa should therefore be understood primarily as a temporary bridge between study and longer-term employment, rather than a permanent work route.
The new short-term visa is not the only change taking effect on November 16.
New Zealand is also extending its standard Post-Study Work Visa to some students completing an NZQCF Level 7 Graduate Diploma.
Students may qualify if they:
Qualifying students can receive open work conditions, with the visa generally reflecting the time spent studying the Graduate Diploma, up to a maximum of one year.
The answer depends on the qualification.
If the Graduate Diploma is on New Zealand's list of qualifications eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa, the graduate may still qualify, but work conditions can require employment in an occupation related to the qualification.
If the graduate does not hold a bachelor's degree and the Graduate Diploma is not on the eligible Post-Study Work Visa list, the new six-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa may instead be available.
The update makes qualification selection more important.
Two programmes with similar names may have very different post-study outcomes because of:
Students should therefore check post-study eligibility before paying their tuition deposit, rather than discovering the rules close to graduation.
