For Indian students planning to study abroad in 2027, New Zealand has introduced an important change to its study-to-work pathway.
From 16 November 2026, eligible international graduates who do not qualify for the standard Post-Study Work Visa will have access to a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa.
The visa provides up to six months of open work rights, giving eligible graduates time to look for employment and, where appropriate, move to another work visa such as the Accredited Employer Work Visa.
At the same time, New Zealand is also expanding Post-Study Work Visa eligibility for some Level 7 Graduate Diploma students.
These changes make it especially important for 2027 applicants to understand one thing before selecting a course:
Your qualification can affect not only your student visa, but also the work rights available after graduation.
The new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa opens on 16 November 2026, while Post-Study Work Visa eligibility also expands from that date for qualifying Level 7 Graduate Diploma holders who already hold a bachelor's degree.
Students planning an early-2027 intake can also read our January & February 2027 Intakes Abroad Guide for application planning across New Zealand and other destinations.

|---|---|
| Main Student Visa | Fee Paying Student Visa |
| Student Visa Fee | From NZD 850 |
| Living Funds | NZD 20,000 per year for tertiary study |
| Shorter Course Funds | NZD 1,667 per month |

| Post-Study Work Visa | Up to 3 years, depending on qualification |
| PSWV Funds Requirement | At least NZD 5,000 |
| PSWV Fee | From NZD 1,670 |
Immigration New Zealand currently lists the Fee Paying Student Visa at from NZD 850, with NZD 20,000 required for each year of tertiary study. The Post-Study Work Visa currently costs from NZD 1,670 and requires at least NZD 5,000 in available living funds. Fees may change, so 2027 applicants should verify them immediately before applying.
The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is a new New Zealand work visa designed for international students who complete certain New Zealand qualifications but do not qualify for the standard Post-Study Work Visa.
Applications open on 16 November 2026.
The visa allows an eligible graduate to:
It is important to understand that this is not a six-month extension automatically added to every student visa.
You must meet the specific qualification, study-duration, financial, health and character requirements.
For the latest policy update, also read our New Zealand New 6-Month Graduate Work Visa Update.
To qualify, you must have successfully completed an eligible NZQCF Level 5 to Level 7 qualification in New Zealand.
The qualification must generally:
You must also:
The visa can be granted only once and cannot be extended.
The new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa provides broad work rights.
Eligible visa holders can work in different jobs for employers in New Zealand while searching for longer-term opportunities.
However, current Immigration New Zealand conditions state that Short-Term Graduate Work Visa holders cannot operate a business as an owner.
This is different from some Post-Study Work Visa conditions, so students should not assume that every open work visa has identical rules.
Potentially, yes, but there is no automatic conversion.
The six-month period is intended to give graduates time to search for employment and explore longer-term options.
For example, a graduate may later be able to apply for an Accredited Employer Work Visa if they obtain suitable employment and meet the separate eligibility conditions for that visa.
Receiving the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa itself does not guarantee:
Students should therefore choose their course primarily for academic quality and career relevance rather than assuming that a graduate visa guarantees long-term settlement.
New Zealand is also extending eligibility for its existing Post-Study Work Visa.
From 16 November 2026, a student completing an NZQCF Level 7 Graduate Diploma may qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa if the student:
There is no time limit on when the bachelor's degree was awarded under the announced rule.
For these qualifying Graduate Diploma holders, the Post-Study Work Visa may generally be issued for the time spent studying the Graduate Diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year.
How long you can stay after graduation depends heavily on what you study.
| Qualification | Typical Post-Study Work Position |
|---|---|
| Level 7 Bachelor's Degree | Eligible subject to study-duration rules |
| Level 7 Graduate Diploma + Bachelor's Degree | Up to the time studied, maximum 1 year under the new rule |
| Eligible Level 8 Qualification | Duration generally linked to time studied in New Zealand |
| Level 9 Master's Degree | Up to 3 years if study requirements are met |
| Level 10 Doctoral Degree | Up to 3 years if study requirements are met |
| Eligible Non-Degree Level 7 or Lower | Must meet eligible-qualification and related-work rules |
| Certain Level 5β7 qualifications not eligible for PSWV | May qualify for the new 6-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa |
Immigration New Zealand states that Master's and Doctoral graduates who meet the required New Zealand study period can receive up to a three-year Post-Study Work Visa. For Level 8 and below, duration generally depends on time spent studying the qualification in New Zealand.
This distinction is extremely important when selecting a New Zealand course.
If you complete an eligible degree Level 7 or higher qualification and meet the required study conditions, your Post-Study Work Visa can generally allow you to work in any legal job anywhere in New Zealand.
If your qualification is non-degree Level 7 or below, it generally needs to appear on New Zealand's list of qualifications eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa.
Your job must also be related to what you studied.
Students should therefore check post-study eligibility before paying a university or college deposit, particularly when considering diploma or vocational programmes.
Generally, no.
New Zealand's standard Post-Study Work Visa is intended as a one-time visa.
Someone who has already held a Post-Study Work Visa normally cannot obtain another one simply by completing another qualification later.
Similarly, you cannot receive the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa if you have already held a Post-Study Work Visa.
This makes course planning particularly important for students who may be considering multiple qualifications in New Zealand.
Most self-funded Indian students studying at an approved New Zealand education provider will apply for a Fee Paying Student Visa.
To apply, you generally need:
The education provider must also be satisfied that the course is suitable for you and that you have the academic and English-language ability required to complete it.
At the time of writing, Immigration New Zealand lists the Fee Paying Student Visa at from NZD 850.
The official page currently indicates that 80% of Fee Paying Student Visa applications are processed within approximately eight weeks.
However, processing times are not guarantees.
Visa demand can rise significantly ahead of major February and July intakes, so students should avoid applying at the last minute.
Students planning Semester 1 can use our January & February 2027 Intakes Abroad Guide to build a realistic admission, finance and visa timeline.
For tertiary education, Immigration New Zealand currently requires students paying for themselves to demonstrate:
NZD 20,000 for each year of study, or
NZD 1,667 for each month if the course is shorter than one year.
These living funds are separate from tuition fees.
You must also be able to pay for travel out of New Zealand, either by holding a ticket or showing additional money for an onward ticket.
You generally need to show that you have paid the tuition fees for:
one course or one year of study β whichever is shorter.
Students applying from outside New Zealand may, in some circumstances, apply before paying the full required tuition amount and receive approval in principle.
The final visa will not be issued until the required fee evidence has been provided.
There are some additional points Indian students should know.
Immigration New Zealand's current guidance states that applicants from India applying from South Asia can generally use only immediate family members as sponsors or financial guarantors.
Immediate family includes:
Indian students may also be eligible to use New Zealand's Funds Transfer Scheme, under which the required maintenance funds can be transferred into a designated New Zealand account and released periodically.
There is no single universal IELTS score imposed by the Fee Paying Student Visa itself for every tertiary course.
Your education provider determines the English-language requirements for the programme.
Immigration New Zealand may also consider English-language evidence when assessing whether your study plans are genuine.
Depending on the university and programme, accepted evidence may include IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL or another recognised test.
Always check the exact university and course requirements rather than relying on a generic βNew Zealand IELTS requirementβ.
Character documentation has become particularly important.
Since July 2026, Immigration New Zealand has emphasised that required police certificates for student and temporary visa applications must be submitted upfront.
A receipt showing that you have applied for a certificate is generally not enough.
For the Fee Paying Student Visa, a police certificate is generally required when you are aged 17 or older and your total intended time in New Zealand reaches 24 months or more, subject to exemptions and previous certificates.
Required police certificates must normally be recent and meet Immigration New Zealand's validity rules.
Yes, eligible students may currently work up to 25 hours per week while studying.
This limit increased from 20 to 25 hours in November 2025.
Depending on the course and visa conditions, tertiary students may also be able to work full-time during scheduled study breaks and the Christmas/New Year holiday period.
Your exact rights are written on your eVisa, so students should always check their individual visa conditions before starting a job.
Students enrolled in eligible research Master's or doctoral programmes have different conditions.
Current Immigration New Zealand guidance states that eligible Master's research and PhD students do not have the same weekly work-hour limit while continuing their full-time study.
A student visa does not automatically give every student's partner an open work visa.
Partner work eligibility depends on the qualification being studied.
For example, partner work rights may be available when the student is studying certain eligible Level 7 or Level 8 qualifications, or eligible Level 9 or Level 10 programmes.
Students travelling as a couple should therefore check partner visa eligibility before selecting the course, especially if the family's financial plan depends on the partner working.
The standard Post-Study Work Visa provides stronger family options than the new six-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa.
Eligible Post-Study Work Visa holders may be able to support:
By comparison, the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa can support visitor visas for a partner and dependent children, but it does not provide relationship-based work or student visa rights for them.
Prepare your documents before starting the final visa application.
Commonly required documents can include:
A strong application is not simply about uploading more documents. Your academic history, chosen programme, career objective and finances should make sense together.
If this is your first international application, our Complete Study Abroad Guide for First-Time Students explains the wider admission and visa-planning process.
Students should pay particular attention to:
If your new programme does not logically connect with your past education or work experience, explain why the course is appropriate for your future plans.
Large unexplained deposits or unclear sources of funds can create additional questions.
If Immigration New Zealand requires a police certificate, submit the correct document upfront.
A Post-Study Work Visa is temporary immigration permission, not a guarantee of employment or residence.
New Zealand experiences seasonal visa demand. Apply well ahead of travel.
| Feature | Short-Term Graduate Work Visa | Post-Study Work Visa |
|---|---|---|
| Starts | Applications from 16 Nov 2026 | Existing route; expanded eligibility from 16 Nov 2026 |
| Duration | Up to 6 months | Up to 3 years depending on qualification |
| Main Purpose | Job search and transition opportunity | Longer post-study employment |
| Eligible Study | Certain NZQCF Level 5β7 qualifications not eligible for PSWV | Eligible Level 7+ degrees and specified other qualifications |
| Minimum Funds | NZD 5,000 | NZD 5,000 |
| Work Rights | Broad/open employment rights | Depends on qualification; degree Level 7+ generally open |
| Repeat Visa | No | No |
| Partner Work Visa Based on Relationship | No | May be available subject to requirements |
| Dependent Child Student Visa Based on Relationship | No | May be available subject to requirements |
The two visas are alternatives in relevant circumstances, not consecutive post-study visas that every graduate can stack together.
The new rules make New Zealand worth evaluating, especially for students who want a study destination where eligible students can work during their course and where multiple post-study pathways exist.
However, a country should not be chosen because of the visa alone.
Compare:
Students are becoming more careful about study-abroad ROI as costs and immigration rules change. Our Study Abroad Plans and Visa Restrictions Report explains why academic and career outcomes should remain central to the decision.
Students comparing countries should also remember that different destinations are moving in different directions.
For example, the UK Graduate visa is scheduled to reduce to 18 months for most bachelor's and master's graduates applying from January 1, 2027, while eligible New Zealand Master's and doctoral graduates may still qualify for up to three years under current New Zealand rules.
That does not automatically make one destination better than another. Course quality, cost, employability and career alignment matter more than visa duration alone.

Prepare English test scores, SOP, academic documents and university applications.
Accept your offer, arrange education funding and organise tuition payment.

Arrange accommodation, insurance, travel and financial access.
Indian students targeting New Zealand Semester 1 in 2027 should begin early rather than waiting until January.
Planning a New Zealand application involves more than choosing a university.
