The choice-filling stage of NEET UG Counselling 2026 Round 3 is now over, shifting the focus from college preferences to the upcoming seat allotment result.
According to the revised Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) schedule, Round 3 choice filling remained available until 12:00 noon on September 28, 2026, while choice locking also closed at the same time. MCC has scheduled seat-allotment processing for September 28 and September 29, followed by the Round 3 allotment result on September 30, 2026. S3WaaS
For candidates waiting for an MBBS, BDS or B.Sc Nursing allotment, however, September 30 is not simply another result date.
Round 3 carries significantly stricter consequences than the earlier stages of MCC counselling. Depending on the result, a candidate may receive a fresh seat, get upgraded from an earlier allotment, retain a previous Round 2 seat, receive no seat at all, or move towards the Online Stray Vacancy Round.
Understanding what each result means before September 30 can prevent costly mistakes during the reporting period.
The current MCC timetable is:
| Activity | Date |
|---|---|
| Round 3 registration | September 22–27, 2026 |
| Choice filling | September 23–28, 2026 |
| Choice filling closed | September 28 at 12 Noon |
| Choice locking | September 27, 7 PM–September 28, 12 Noon |
| Seat allotment processing | September 28–29, 2026 |
| Round 3 seat allotment result | September 30, 2026 |
| Reporting/joining | October 1–9, 2026 |
| Verification of joined candidates | October 10, 2026 |
| Stray Vacancy registration starts | October 12, 2026 |
These dates come directly from MCC's revised 2026 Round 2, Round 3 and Stray Vacancy schedule. S3WaaS
As of September 28, MCC's UG portal is also displaying Round 3 clear vacancies, virtual vacancies and newly added seats for the current counselling cycle. Medical Counselling Committee
No.
Once the choice-filling and locking period ends, candidates cannot modify the preference list considered for Round 3 allotment.
MCC's 2026 counselling bulletin states that choices can be modified only before they are locked. Once locked, they cannot be changed or unlocked—even by MCC. S3WaaS
There is one important point for candidates who saved choices but forgot to press the final locking button.
MCC states that if submitted choices are not manually locked by the candidate, the system automatically locks the saved choices according to the counselling schedule. S3WaaS
Therefore, candidates should not panic simply because they did not manually press “Lock Choices,” provided their choices were properly saved within the permitted window.
These two days are scheduled for processing of seat allotment.
Seat allotment is not based only on NEET marks.
MCC processes the eligible candidates according to factors that include their NEET UG merit position, applicable category and quota, available seats and the order of college/course preferences submitted during Round 3.
The MCC information bulletin specifically describes seat allotment as being based on merit and preferences. S3WaaS
This is why a candidate with a better rank does not automatically receive every seat available at that rank: the actual outcome also depends on eligibility, category, seat availability and the preference sequence entered by the candidate.
The current official schedule lists September 30, 2026 for the Round 3 result. S3WaaS
Candidates should check the official MCC UG Medical Counselling portal rather than relying only on screenshots or unofficial result links circulated through social media.
MCC also states that candidates should regularly monitor its website because counselling updates are not necessarily communicated individually to every candidate. S3WaaS
When MCC publishes the allotment result:
MCC specifically requires candidates to download the allotment letter from the official website when a seat is allotted. S3WaaS
There are several possible outcomes, and each one has different consequences.
If you did not previously hold a seat and are allotted one in Round 3, the next step is reporting and joining the allotted institute.
The Round 3 reporting period is scheduled from October 1 to October 9, 2026. S3WaaS
Unlike Round 1, candidates should not assume they can simply accept an allotment provisionally and reconsider later.
Round 3 is much more restrictive.
MCC's flow chart states that a candidate receiving a Round 3 seat must report to the allotted institute. Non-joining can result in forfeiture of the security deposit, and Round 3 allotted candidates face restrictions on subsequent counselling participation. S3WaaS
Suppose you were holding College A from Round 2 but submitted a higher-preference College B during Round 3.
If MCC allots College B, the earlier Round 2 seat is automatically cancelled.
MCC clearly states that when an upgrade occurs in Round 3, the previously allotted Round 2 seat is cancelled and allocated to another candidate. The candidate has no claim over the previous seat after the upgrade. S3WaaS
This is one of the reasons candidates were advised to include in Round 3 only those options they genuinely preferred over their existing seat.
If you get upgraded, prepare to report to the newly allotted institute.
This situation is different.
MCC states that if a candidate participating for Round 3 upgradation does not receive another allotment, the earlier Round 2 seat is retained. S3WaaS
However, the 2026 counselling scheme introduces an important reporting requirement.
After the Round 3 result, Float candidates from Round 1 or Round 2 who do not get upgraded must also physically report to their retained institute. S3WaaS
Do not assume that because the earlier college remains unchanged there is nothing further to do.
Candidates who receive no Round 3 seat and do not already hold another MCC seat may need to evaluate whether they are eligible for the upcoming Online Stray Vacancy Round.
Eligibility must be checked against the MCC rules rather than assumed automatically.
The current schedule begins Stray Vacancy registration on October 12, 2026. S3WaaS
This is probably the most important part of the article.
MCC's 2026 bulletin states that after the Round 3 provisional allotment result, physical reporting is mandatory for all candidates allotted a Round 3 seat.
It also applies to earlier Float candidates who participated for upgradation but retained their previous seat because no upgrade occurred. S3WaaS
This is different from the online-document-verification mechanism available to certain Float candidates in earlier stages.
After Round 3, candidates should be prepared to physically complete their admission formalities.
MCC states that once a candidate joins a third-round seat, the candidate will not be permitted to vacate that allotted Round 3 seat. S3WaaS
The counselling scheme also warns candidates to make an informed decision about participating in Round 3 because candidates joining in the third round cannot simply resign and continue to another MCC round. S3WaaS
That makes the September 30 result particularly consequential.
Do not wait until the result is released to start locating certificates.
MCC's 2026 information bulletin lists the following major documents for reporting:
Candidates must carry original documents, along with the required copies. MCC states that candidates without original certificates/documents will not be permitted to complete admission at the allotted medical or dental college. S3WaaS
The allotted institute may additionally require documents or forms beyond MCC's general list, so candidates should check the individual college's admission instructions immediately after allotment.
Getting an MBBS seat can create understandable excitement, but candidates should still verify the admission details carefully.
Check the exact college name, course, quota, category under which the seat was allotted, tuition fees, hostel charges, security deposit, bond conditions, service obligations and reporting procedure.
MCC itself advises candidates to verify college fees, bonds and related conditions directly with the institution because the committee does not take responsibility for college-specific fee or bond information. S3WaaS
This becomes particularly important for Deemed Universities and higher-fee institutions.
A candidate should know the complete financial commitment before reporting rather than discovering major additional charges after travelling to the institute.
Technically, the Round 3 reporting window is scheduled from October 1 through October 9.
That does not mean October 9 should become your planned reporting date.
MCC recommends contacting the allotted institution immediately after allotment because some colleges may require two or three days to complete admission formalities. MCC also states that the joining deadline will not be extended simply because a candidate started the process too late. S3WaaS
A better approach after receiving an allotment is:
September 30: download the result/allotment letter and contact the college.
October 1 onward: arrange travel, original certificates and applicable admission fees, and complete reporting as early as practical.
Candidates who remain without a seat after Round 3 naturally start looking towards the Stray Vacancy Round.
The currently scheduled timeline is:
| Stray Vacancy Activity | Date |
|---|---|
| Registration | October 12–14, 2026 |
| Registration closes | October 14 at 3 PM |
| Payment deadline | October 14 at 6 PM |
| Choice filling | October 12–15 |
| Choice filling closes | October 15 at 10 AM |
| Choice locking | October 14–15 |
| Seat allotment processing | October 15–16 |
| Stray Vacancy result | October 17, 2026 |
| Reporting | October 19–26, 2026 |
Fresh registration and fresh choice filling will be available for the Stray Vacancy Round. S3WaaS
But not everyone can participate.
According to MCC, candidates are not eligible if they:
Candidates outside those restricted categories may participate subject to the remaining MCC eligibility rules. S3WaaS
This point matters greatly.
Do not intentionally skip a Round 3 allotment assuming that you can simply try again in the Stray Vacancy Round. MCC specifically lists candidates allotted a Round 3 seat who do not report among those ineligible for the Stray Vacancy Round. S3WaaS
Candidates participating in both All India and state counselling should continue monitoring their respective state authority separately.
MCC manages the counselling categories under its central framework, including the applicable 15% AIQ seats and participating Central Universities, Deemed Universities, AIIMS, JIPMER and other notified categories. State-quota admissions operate according to separate state counselling schedules and eligibility rules. S3WaaS
More importantly, MCC's counselling scheme provides for sharing candidate data between the Centre and states in later rounds.
This is why students holding or receiving seats through different counselling systems should not make assumptions about stray-round eligibility without checking their exact allotment status and the latest MCC/state rules. S3WaaS
The day before the scheduled result should be used for preparation rather than endlessly trying to predict the allotment.
Keep your MCC login details ready.
Arrange all original certificates and multiple photocopies.
Check the likely travel routes to colleges appearing high on your submitted preference list.
Discuss the financial requirement with your family, particularly if your choices included private or deemed institutions.
Review each preferred college's fees, hostel, bond requirements and admission contact details.
Most importantly, understand the consequences of a Round 3 allotment before the result arrives.
The decision you made during choice filling is now being converted into an actual seat-allotment outcome.
Yes. Under the current MCC timetable, choice filling and choice locking closed at 12 noon on September 28, 2026. S3WaaS
The Round 3 result is scheduled for September 30, 2026. S3WaaS
According to MCC, choices that were saved but not manually locked are automatically locked by the system according to the counselling schedule. S3WaaS
No. Once the locking deadline has passed, locked choices cannot be modified or unlocked. S3WaaS
If you were holding a Round 2 seat and do not receive an upgrade in Round 3, your earlier seat is retained. You must follow the applicable Round 3 physical-reporting requirement for retained Float candidates. S3WaaS
Your previous Round 2 seat is automatically cancelled, and you have no claim over that earlier seat after the upgrade. S3WaaS
Reporting at the allotted institute is scheduled from October 1 to October 9, 2026. S3WaaS
MCC states that candidates joining a Round 3 allotted seat are not permitted to vacate that seat in the manner available in earlier rounds. S3WaaS
Candidates allotted a Round 3 MCC seat who do not report are specifically listed as not eligible for the MCC Stray Vacancy Round. S3WaaS
Registration is currently scheduled to start on October 12, 2026, with the allotment result scheduled for October 17. S3WaaS
For candidates who completed NEET UG 2026 Round 3 choice filling, the next major date is:
September 30, 2026 — MCC Round 3 seat allotment result.
Until then, there is no benefit in repeatedly trying to change or second-guess locked preferences. Instead, prepare for each possible result.
If you receive a fresh or upgraded seat, be ready for mandatory reporting.
If your Round 2 seat is retained, understand the physical-reporting requirement.
If no seat is allotted, check your eligibility for the Stray Vacancy Round rather than assuming participation is automatic.
Round 3 is more restrictive than earlier rounds, so every step after September 30 should be taken according to the current MCC counselling rules—not outdated advice from previous years.
