Candidates who have not yet submitted their GATE 2027 application have received additional time. IIT Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, has extended the regular online registration deadline to October 5, 2026 without any late fee.
The earlier regular-registration closing date was September 27, 2026.
The live GATE 2027 portal now shows October 5 as the revised last date for regular registration without a late fee, while the extended registration period with a late fee will close on October 12, 2026. IIT Madras has stated that the regular deadline was extended after receiving many requests from applicants and has advised candidates not to wait until the final day to complete their forms. GATE 2027
This extension is particularly useful for candidates facing DigiLocker verification issues, document-upload problems, payment difficulties or uncertainty over their GATE paper and examination-city choices.
However, the extra time should not be treated as a reason to delay further. GATE applications involve identity details, academic information, photograph and signature uploads, paper selection, exam-city preferences and fee payment. A last-minute technical or payment issue can still leave an application incomplete.
Here is the updated schedule candidates should follow:
| Event | Revised Date |
|---|---|
| GATE 2027 registration started | September 2, 2026 |
| Earlier regular registration deadline | September 27, 2026 |
| New registration deadline without late fee | October 5, 2026 |
| Registration deadline with late fee | October 12, 2026 |
| Application rectification opens | October 14, 2026 |
| Application rectification closes | October 21, 2026 |
| Exam-city allotment notification | January 4, 2027 |
| GATE 2027 exam | February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 & 21, 2027 |
| GATE 2027 result | March 19, 2027 |
The official schedule states that dates are liable to change. Candidates should therefore rely on the GATE 2027 website rather than screenshots or forwarded social-media messages. GATE 2027
Originally, September 27 was the deadline for paying the regular application fee, while October 5 was scheduled as the extended deadline with a late fee.
The latest update effectively gives candidates another eight days at the regular fee rate.
The current live GATE portal now shows:
Regular registration without late fee: October 5, 2026
Extended registration with late fee: October 12, 2026. GATE 2027
Candidates who have not applied should therefore try to complete their form by October 5 rather than paying the higher extended-period fee.
The official GATE 2027 fee structure distinguishes between the regular and extended periods.
| Category | Regular: 1 Paper | Regular: 2 Papers | Extended: 1 Paper | Extended: 2 Papers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Female / SC / ST / PwD candidates | βΉ1,000 | βΉ2,000 | βΉ1,500 | βΉ2,500 |
| All other candidates, including foreign nationals | βΉ2,000 | βΉ4,000 | βΉ2,500 | βΉ4,500 |
PwD refers to a Person with Benchmark Disability.
Since regular registration is now available until October 5, eligible candidates completing the application within this period can continue to pay the regular fee. The higher extended-period fee becomes relevant for applications submitted during the late-fee window. GATE 2027
Application fees are generally non-refundable. The official portal states that refunds are processed for duplicate transactions when valid proof is submitted. GATE 2027
GATE eligibility is broader than many applicants assume.
According to IIT Madras, candidates who are currently studying in the third year or above of an undergraduate degree programme, or who have already completed a government-approved degree programme in eligible disciplines, can appear for GATE 2027.
Eligible fields include:
Candidates who obtained or are pursuing qualifying degrees outside India can also apply, subject to the specified degree and year-of-study requirements. GATE 2027
There is also no age limit for GATE, and the official FAQ states that there is no restriction on the number of times a candidate can appear for the examination. GATE 2027
Candidates should nevertheless check programme-specific eligibility separately when later applying for M.Tech, MS or PhD admission. Being eligible for GATE does not automatically mean you satisfy every institute's postgraduate admission criteria.
GATE 2027 has introduced a significant registration change involving DigiLocker.
For Indian nationals, registration is routed through DigiLocker. Information such as the candidate's name, date of birth, mobile number, email address, profile information, address and verified identification details can be fetched through DigiLocker. GATE 2027
There is an important clarification here.
Using DigiLocker is mandatory for Indian nationals, but the latest official instructions allow applicants to continue even with an unverified DigiLocker account.
Candidates using an unverified account can select the default identity proof while completing the application. Their applications may subsequently undergo additional scrutiny, and original documents can be verified at the examination centre.
IIT Madras nevertheless recommends using a verified DigiLocker account for a smoother process. GATE 2027
This is worth noting because some earlier GATE 2027 information published when registration opened described verified DigiLocker as mandatory.
Another unusual but important GATE 2027 instruction is that candidates should not delete the verified or unverified DigiLocker account used for their GATE application after submitting the form and paying the application fee.
The GATE portal states that future communications will be associated with the DigiLocker account used for submitting the application. GATE 2027
Use an account you expect to retain throughout the examination cycle.
Before opening the application form, keep your academic and identity information ready.
The application may require:
SC and ST candidates seeking the applicable fee concession need to upload their category certificate in the required format.
PwD candidates may need an appropriate UDID or PwD certificate and, where applicable, documents relating to scribe or compensatory-time requirements.
The GATE portal provides specified naming instructions for documents uploaded into the GATE2027 DigiLocker folder. GATE 2027
Before beginning the GATE form, ensure your DigiLocker information is accurate.
Pay particular attention to:
If there is a mismatch between DigiLocker and the GATE portal, IIT Madras advises candidates to complete DigiLocker e-KYC and retry. GATE 2027
Access GOAPS only through the official GATE 2027 website.
GATE 2027 GOAPS application portal
Avoid submitting sensitive identity or payment information through links sent by unknown social-media accounts.
Provide the necessary consent so that GATE 2027 can access the relevant DigiLocker details.
Candidates with an unverified DigiLocker account can follow the alternate procedure available on the application portal.
Your name is particularly important.
The official instructions state that the name entered in the application should match the valid photo identification that you will produce at the examination centre.
The GATE scorecard will also use the candidate name obtained through the relevant identity records. GATE 2027
Do not casually submit an application with spelling differences across identity records.
Provide details about your qualifying degree and institution.
Students who are currently enrolled should ensure they enter their course and year information correctly.
Candidates may appear for one or up to two papers, but the second paper must be chosen from the combinations permitted by GATE.
You should select a paper appropriate to your academic background and postgraduate or career objective rather than choosing solely based on perceived difficulty.
GATE 2027 has 30 test papers, including the newly introduced Robotics and Automation (RA) paper. IIT Madras has also revised several syllabi and sectional paper codes for this cycle. GATE 2027
Applicants are asked to submit six city preferences from the applicable zone.
According to the official FAQ, authorities generally try to allot the first choice, but operational constraints can result in another preferenceβor, in some situations, an examination city outside the candidate's original options. GATE 2027
Choose cities you can realistically travel to.
Photograph and signature files must meet the specifications prescribed by IIT Madras.
For the photograph, the official specifications include a passport-size colour image with a white background and clearly visible frontal face. The face should occupy roughly 60β70% of the image.
The photograph file must be in JPEG/JPG format and within the official file-size and resolution limits. GATE 2027
For the signature:
The signature submitted during registration should match the signature used during the examination process. GATE 2027
GATE 2027 also requires a live facial image during registration.
The official instructions recommend using a computer with a webcam or a phone with at least a 5 MP front-facing camera and capturing the image in good lighting. GATE 2027
Candidates with visual impairments who encounter problems with live facial capture are advised by IIT Madras to contact the official helpdesk. GATE 2027
Check every major field:
Do not assume everything can be changed later.
After completing the online form, proceed to payment using one of the available payment options.
Additional payment-processing or bank charges may apply depending on the payment method. GATE 2027
Do not assume that a form is complete simply because you filled all the fields.
Check the application status after payment.
The official GATE FAQ distinguishes between statuses such as:
Application submitted: payment has not yet been completed.
Application submitted and payment received successfully: the form and payment have been received and the application can proceed to scrutiny.
Under Scrutiny: verification of the submitted application is underway. GATE 2027
Save your submitted application and payment details for future reference.
The deadline extension gives you more time, but server traffic, payment failures or document issues can occur near the closing time.
Apply earlier wherever possible.
Name and date-of-birth mismatches can create unnecessary verification problems.
Your GATE paper can affect the postgraduate programmes and opportunities you later pursue.
Check the latest syllabus and permitted two-paper combinations before selecting it.
IIT Madras specifically warns that unreadable uploaded documents can delay processing and may potentially lead to rejection of candidature. GATE 2027
Log back into GOAPS and check the application/payment status.
The GATE FAQ states that one email address can be used for only one application form, and candidates appearing in two papers should choose the two-paper option in a single application rather than submitting separate forms. GATE 2027
After registration closes, submitted applications undergo scrutiny.
Candidates should regularly log in and monitor the official portal in case clarification or rectification is required.
The presently listed application-rectification period is October 14 to October 21, 2026. GATE 2027
The examination-city allotment notification is scheduled for January 4, 2027, while the admit-card download date is currently listed as TBA on the official portal. GATE 2027
GATE 2027 examinations are planned for:
Results are scheduled for March 19, 2027. GATE 2027
GATE is not limited to a single admission route.
A valid GATE score can be used by eligible candidates for postgraduate and doctoral programmes at participating institutions. Several Public Sector Undertakings also use GATE scores for recruitment, although qualifying GATE does not by itself guarantee either admission or employment. GATE 2027
The GATE 2027 score will remain valid for three years from the date of the result. GATE 2027
Candidates considering postgraduate engineering can begin comparing specialisations before the examination rather than waiting until results are announced.
For example, students interested in computing can explore iYou Global's M.Tech Computer Science programme guide, which covers eligibility, course structure and college options. iYou Global
The regular registration deadline has been extended to October 5, 2026. Candidates applying by the revised regular deadline can pay the normal application fee. GATE 2027
The live official GATE portal now lists October 12, 2026 as the extended registration closing date with a late fee. GATE 2027
IIT Madras states that the regular registration period was extended after receiving many requests from candidates. GATE 2027
IIT Madras is the organising institute for GATE 2027. GATE 2027
Indian nationals must use DigiLocker in the GATE 2027 registration process. Applicants may currently proceed with either a verified or an unverified DigiLocker account, although IIT Madras recommends a verified account for a smoother experience. GATE 2027
During the regular period, Female/SC/ST/PwD applicants pay βΉ1,000 for one paper, while other candidates including foreign nationals pay βΉ2,000 for one paper. Different fees apply for two papers and during the extended period. GATE 2027
Yes. Candidates may select up to two papers, but only from the permitted two-paper combinations. A separate form is not required for the second paper. GATE 2027
The examination is scheduled for February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027. GATE 2027
The scheduled result date is March 19, 2027. GATE 2027
The GATE 2027 registration extension is a useful opportunity for candidates who missed the earlier September 27 deadline.
The most important date now is:
October 5, 2026 β GATE 2027 regular registration closes without a late fee.
Candidates who still miss the regular deadline currently have until October 12, 2026 with the applicable late fee.
Use the extension to verify your DigiLocker details, select the correct GATE paper, prepare valid photographs and documents, review your exam-city choices and complete the payment well before the final hours.
For students whose long-term objective is M.Tech, research or another postgraduate engineering pathway, the application form is only the first stage. Your GATE paper choice, preparation strategy and eventual programme shortlist should all align with the career direction you intend to pursue.
