If you are planning an MBA in 2027, there is a good chance you are considering more than one entrance exam.
CAT, XAT, NMAT and SNAP are among the most important management entrance tests in India, but choosing between them is not simply about finding the “easiest” exam.
The better question is:
Which exam gives you access to the business schools you would genuinely want to join?
Each exam has a different testing style, admission ecosystem, fee structure and attempt policy. A student targeting the IIMs may need a different exam strategy from someone whose priority is XLRI, NMIMS or Symbiosis.
So instead of filling every available form, start with your target colleges and work backwards.
One important clarification before we begin: while students frequently search for “CAT vs XAT vs NMAT vs SNAP 2026”, the current Xavier Aptitude Test is officially called XAT 2027 because the examination is scheduled for January 3, 2027.
| Factor | CAT 2026 | XAT 2027 | NMAT 2026 | SNAP 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conducting Body | IIMs; CAT 2026 organised by IIM Indore | XLRI Jamshedpur | GMAC | Symbiosis International |
| Main Target | IIMs and other CAT-accepting B-schools | XLRI and XAT-accepting B-schools | NMIMS and other NMAT-accepting schools | Participating Symbiosis MBA programmes |
| Exam Date / Window | November 29, 2026 | January 3, 2027 | November 2–December 20, 2026 | December 13, 19 and 26, 2026 |
| Duration | 120 minutes | 180 minutes | 120 minutes | 60 minutes |
| Attempts | One annual sitting | One annual sitting | Up to 3 | Up to 3 |
| Key Feature | VARC, DILR and QA | Decision Making + GK | Adaptive test, flexible scheduling, no negative marking | High-speed test + Ethics, Morality and Values |
| Best For | IIM-focused and broad MBA applicants | XLRI aspirants | NMIMS and flexible-testing applicants | Symbiosis aspirants |
There is no single “best” MBA entrance exam. The best choice depends on the colleges you want, your examination strengths and how broadly you want to keep your MBA options open.
The Common Admission Test remains the most important examination for students targeting the Indian Institutes of Management.
CAT scores are also accepted by several leading non-IIM business schools, which makes CAT particularly useful for students who want to maintain a broad MBA college shortlist.
CAT 2026 is being organised by IIM Indore and will be conducted on November 29, 2026.
The registration deadline has now been extended to September 22, 2026 at 5 PM.

CAT primarily evaluates candidates across three areas:
The examination lasts 120 minutes, with sectional time limits.
CAT rewards a combination of conceptual ability, question selection, accuracy and time management.
CAT should be one of your primary examinations if the IIMs are part of your serious target list.
It is also useful if you have not finalised one specific business school and want access to a wider pool of MBA and PGDM programmes.
The main risk is that CAT gives you one examination opportunity in the annual cycle. A poor test day cannot be corrected with a second CAT attempt a few weeks later.
That is one reason many serious MBA candidates combine CAT with XAT, NMAT or SNAP.
The Xavier Aptitude Test is conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur.
For the current admission cycle, registration for XAT 2027 runs until December 6, 2026, and the examination is scheduled for January 3, 2027 from 2 PM to 5 PM.
XAT is especially important if XLRI is among your dream business schools, but its usefulness extends beyond XLRI because its scores are accepted by many other management institutions.
The biggest difference is the dedicated Decision Making section.
XAT broadly tests:
Decision Making makes XAT strategically different from CAT.
Candidates are presented with situations that may involve business judgement, ethics, priorities, stakeholders and practical decision-making.
You cannot therefore assume that strong CAT preparation automatically makes you fully prepared for XAT.
Take XAT seriously if XLRI is on your target list.
CAT and XAT can also be a strong combination because Quantitative and Verbal preparation overlaps considerably, while the two examinations give you access to different sets of business schools.
The additional preparation should focus particularly on XAT Decision Making and General Knowledge.
NMAT by GMAC follows a very different testing model from CAT and XAT.
Instead of one fixed examination date, candidates choose their test date from an available testing window.
For 2026:
Registration: August 20 to October 10
Exam Window: November 2 to December 20
NMAT allows candidates up to three attempts during the testing year.
It also has no negative marking and allows candidates to choose the order in which they attempt the three sections.
| Section | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Language Skills | 36 | 28 minutes |
| Quantitative Skills | 36 | 52 minutes |
| Logical Reasoning | 36 | 40 minutes |
| Total | 108 | 120 minutes |
NMAT is a computer-adaptive examination, which means the difficulty of questions is adjusted based on a candidate’s performance.
The ability to take NMAT up to three times does not mean every participating institution will automatically consider your best score.
NMIMS currently accepts the first valid NMAT attempt score.
Therefore, if NMIMS is your primary target, do not treat your first NMAT sitting as a practice examination.
Prepare properly before scheduling it.
For a detailed breakdown of NMAT dates, pattern, fees, scoring, cutoff guidance and preparation, read our NMAT 2026 Complete Guide.
SNAP is particularly relevant for students targeting participating MBA programmes under Symbiosis International.
SNAP 2026 registration closes on November 25, 2026.
The three examination dates are:
Candidates can take up to three SNAP tests.
If a candidate appears for more than one test, the higher score is considered for final percentile calculation. The official SNAP guidelines also state that there will be no normalisation between attempts.
| Section | Questions |
|---|---|
| General English | 10 |
| Analytical & Logical Reasoning | 20 |
| Quantitative, Data Interpretation & Data Sufficiency | 20 |
| Ethics, Morality and Values | 10 |
| Total | 60 |
The examination lasts just 60 minutes.
Every incorrect answer attracts a 25% negative mark.
One of the biggest changes in the 2026 structure is the inclusion of Ethics, Morality and Values, carrying 10 questions.
Students using older SNAP preparation material should make sure their mock tests and preparation resources reflect the latest structure.
SNAP should be a priority if institutes such as SIBM Pune, SCMHRD or other participating Symbiosis institutes are on your serious shortlist.
The test is relatively short but extremely speed-intensive.
You need to make fast decisions about which questions to attempt, which questions to skip and how to maintain accuracy under time pressure.
Application cost should also be considered when building your examination strategy.
| Exam | Registration Fee |
|---|---|
| CAT 2026 | ₹2,700 for General/EWS/NC-OBC; ₹1,350 for SC/ST/PwBD |
| XAT 2027 | ₹2,300; additional fee for selected XLRI programmes |
| NMAT 2026 | ₹3,000 + applicable taxes |
| SNAP 2026 | ₹2,550 per test + taxes; separate programme application fee |
If you take multiple SNAP or NMAT attempts and apply separately to several programmes, the total application cost can rise quickly.
This is why “I will fill every MBA form” is not always the smartest admission strategy.
Shortlist your colleges first.
Prioritise CAT.
Adding XAT can be a strong second option because much of your core aptitude preparation remains useful while XAT expands your business-school choices.
Prioritise XAT.
CAT should still be strongly considered because it opens a much broader set of institutions.
Prioritise NMAT.
Remember that NMIMS currently considers the first valid NMAT attempt, so your first sitting should be well prepared.
Prioritise SNAP.
Add CAT if you also want to compete for IIMs and other CAT-accepting management institutions.
For some students, yes.
For everyone, no.
A sensible combination depends on your college shortlist.
| Target Colleges | Suggested Exam Combination |
|---|---|
| IIMs + XLRI | CAT + XAT |
| IIMs + NMIMS | CAT + NMAT |
| IIMs + Symbiosis | CAT + SNAP |
| XLRI + NMIMS | XAT + NMAT |
| IIMs + XLRI + NMIMS | CAT + XAT + NMAT |
| Broad shortlist including Symbiosis | CAT + XAT + SNAP, with NMAT if NMIMS is also a genuine target |
The principle is simple:
Do not choose your colleges based on the exams you happened to take. Choose your exams based on the colleges you would actually consider joining.
There is no universal answer.
Each examination creates a different type of difficulty.
CAT can be challenging because of conceptual depth, DILR set selection, sectional time limits and intense percentile competition.
XAT adds Decision Making and General Knowledge to the traditional aptitude areas, creating a different testing style.
NMAT does not have negative marking, but candidates must manage strict sectional timing and an adaptive testing environment.
SNAP lasts only 60 minutes, which makes speed and question selection critical. Negative marking also means blindly attempting questions can reduce your score.
Instead of asking:
“Which MBA exam is easiest?”
Ask:
“Which exam pattern suits my strengths and which colleges will it help me reach?”
Yes, to a large extent.
The foundation overlaps across Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension and Logical Reasoning.
A more efficient preparation model is:
Build one strong aptitude foundation first, then add exam-specific preparation.
| Exam | Additional Focus |
|---|---|
| CAT | DILR selection, sectional strategy and deeper aptitude practice |
| XAT | Decision Making and General Knowledge |
| NMAT | Speed, adaptive-test familiarity and sectional timing |
| SNAP | Very fast question selection, accuracy and Ethics preparation |
Creating four completely separate study plans wastes time.
Build your fundamentals once, then adapt them to each examination format.

Exam schedules may be revised by conducting bodies. Candidates should always verify final dates on the respective official examination websites before making payments or travel arrangements.
Before registering for another examination, answer four questions.
Divide your shortlist into dream, realistic and backup institutions.
Work backwards from admission requirements.
Some students perform better in longer analytical tests.
Others are particularly strong under speed pressure.
Some may be comfortable with XAT’s judgement-based Decision Making questions, while others may prefer NMAT’s no-negative-marking format.
Consider examination fees, programme application fees, travel and preparation time together.
If you need help comparing MBA/PGDM programmes, entrance exams and colleges, explore our Management Admission Guidance.
CAT, XAT, NMAT and SNAP should not be treated as four versions of the same MBA entrance examination.
They support different admission strategies.
Choose CAT if IIMs and a broad range of management schools are your priority.
Choose XAT if XLRI is an important target.
Choose NMAT if NMIMS and other NMAT-accepting institutions are high on your shortlist or you prefer a flexible testing window.
Choose SNAP if participating Symbiosis MBA programmes are important to you.
For many aspirants, the best strategy will not be one exam or all four.
It will be a carefully selected combination of two or three examinations aligned with a realistic B-school shortlist.
That approach protects your preparation time, controls application costs and gives every exam you take a clear purpose.
Not necessarily. CAT is the most relevant choice for IIM aspirants, while XAT is important for XLRI, NMAT for NMIMS and SNAP for participating Symbiosis MBA programmes.
Yes, it can be a strong combination if you are targeting IIMs as well as XLRI or other XAT-accepting colleges. Much of the core aptitude preparation overlaps.
NMAT has no negative marking and offers multiple attempts, but it has strict sectional timing and an adaptive format. It should not be treated as an easy exam.
Candidates can take NMAT up to three times in a testing year. However, individual institutions may have different score-acceptance policies. NMIMS currently accepts the first valid NMAT score.
Candidates can appear for up to three SNAP 2026 tests. If multiple tests are taken, the higher score is used for percentile calculation.
The current examination is officially XAT 2027 because it will be conducted on January 3, 2027, although registration and most preparation take place during 2026.
SNAP 2026 includes a new 10-question Ethics, Morality and Values section.
Yes. CAT preparation creates a strong base in Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, but you should still practise the unique format and strategy required by each examination.
It depends on your college shortlist. CAT + XAT is a strong combination for students targeting IIMs and XLRI. Add NMAT if NMIMS is a serious target or SNAP if Symbiosis programmes are important to you.
